New Case IH Magnum Mid-Range Tractors

Three new workhorses have been added to the Case IH Magnum tractor family, the standard of excellence for row-crop productivity on North American farms for more than 20 years.

The new mid-range models – Magnum 180, Magnum 190 and Magnum 210 with PTO horsepower ratings of 150, 165 and 180, respectively – expand the industry leading series to eight models and extend the tradition of leadership for Case IH.

"These tractors are all Magnum, especially in the cab area, yet they have a lighter overall footprint reflecting the ideal weight-to-power ratio needed for this horsepower class," says Tom Dean, marketing director of tractors for Case IH.

"They are a perfect match for the typical mid-sized row-crop implements, offering the largest cab in the industry, a fuel-efficient power train, and the latest in precision farming capabilities."

There's plenty of space for the operator to get comfortable during long working days, courtesy of the same Surveyor cab featured on the larger Magnum models. "The unsurpassed cab size and layout provide ample leg and elbow room, accommodate precision farming instrumentation along with electronic accessories and still allow you to stash your personal gear," Dean says.

The Surveyor cab also provides unsurpassed visibility, both during the day and during nighttime operation. There are excellent sightlines in all directions due to the layout of this cab, and a new A-post instrumentation cluster displays key tractor operational data in plain view of the operator.

The new MultiControl Armrest standard in the 2009 Magnum Series is a major advancement, putting key controls literally at the operator's fingertips. "This is the latest in Case IH tractor-control technology. It simplifies every operation, including end-of-row functions, by putting the controls in one easily accessible location," Dean says. "Adding the optional, integrated joystick provides simultaneous control of optional third mid-mount functions such as a loader grapple.

"Producers across North America provided input on the design of the MultiControl Armrest. Our tractor designs receive customer input through virtual reality simulations, but in this case customers were also involved throughout the development stages, even shaping clay models of the controls to be sure we met their ergonomic and functional requirements.

"We have a history of innovation in operator controls. When we unveiled the Magnum CommandArm armrest in 1999, we set a new standard in the industry, and customers have relied upon this ever since, and the MultiControl Armrest shows we've moved the bar even higher," Dean says.

Fuel savings
All 2009 Magnum Series tractors come with the new DieselSaver Auto Productivity Management (APM) system standard. High fuels costs are on everyone's mind, and the APM system has been shown to improve fuel efficiency as much as 25 percent in select activities, Dean says. "It's earned its DieselSaver trademark.

"APM will help your experienced operators cover more acres with less fuel, but it really helps new operators because of its simplicity," Dean says. "A three-position toggle switch activates the system. Then, the engine throttle handle serves as a ground speed selector whether ‘field' or ‘road' mode has been activated. Once the desired ground speed is attained, APM automatically adjusts engine speed and transmission ratio to provide the best balance of power and fuel economy."

The engines are also fully biodiesel compatible. When approved Case IH maintenance procedures are followed, these engines are rated for up to a 100 percent biodiesel blend (B100), Dean says.

Getting power to the ground efficiently
Power for all three new models is generated by a quiet running, fuel-efficient 6.75 liter engine rated at 2,200 rpm. Power Boost is standard, providing an additional 35 hp on the Magnum 180 and Magnum 190 models, and an additional 25 hp on the Magnum 210 for tough conditions.

"Engine Power Boost recognizes when additional horsepower is needed for PTO, hydraulic or transport activities, and increases power so you maintain productivity despite steep grades or tough field or crop conditions," Dean says.

Power is transferred to the ground through one of three different versions of the full powershift transmission, each providing ample working ranges for any application. The versions include the standard 18-speed or a 19th gear in one of two configurations. "There's a fuel-saving economy gear for excellent transport fuel economy in a 25 mph version, or a 30 mph option that reduces travel time between fields," Dean says.

A front Surround Frame similar to the larger Magnum models is featured in the mid-range models. This proven front frame design provides outstanding in-row visibility, a best-in-class end-of-row turning ability, and provides built-in working weight.

Both standard and suspended 10-bolt hub MFD axles are available, aiding maneuverability. "The turning radius with these models is best in class at 16 feet with typical row-crop tires. You can get back into your next pass quickly at the headlands, improving your in-field productivity," Dean says.

A three-point hitch with electronic draft control is standard on each model. Hitch lift capacity is 12,787 pounds (5,800 kg) with an optional hitch lift capacity of 15,873 pounds (7,299 kg). Like their big brothers, the new mid-range Magnum models feature wheel slip control, height limit control, end-of-row function and Ride Control for smoother transport of mounted implements.

The hydraulic system comes with three standard electro-hydraulic remotes with up to five valves available as an option. The pressure flow compensated system produces 39.6 gpm (150 L/m) pump flow to handle today's hydraulically demanding implements. For loaders such as the perfectly matched Case IH L780 loader, two or three mid-mount electro-hydraulic remote valves are available as factory-installed options.

Taking advantage of precision
Improving productivity through more efficient and accurate operation, along with automated recordkeeping, is another option with the new mid-range Magnums.

Standard AFS AccuGuide Ready allows operators to take full advantage of the benefits of Case IH precision agriculture technology. "AFS AccuGuide autoguidance, an AFS Pro 600 color display, and Field Performer software combine to enable monitoring of productivity from the tractor seat. Field-specific recordkeeping, including acres and fuel economy by field and even by an individual operator allows an operation to zero-in on new opportunities for enhancing their efficiency and profitability each year," Dean says.

Completing components including antenna/receiver, navigation controller and AFS Pro 600 color displays are all available fully factory installed.
