The TD-40's diesel engine was started on gasoline and then switched to diesel. The engine was manually cranked from the left side, which supplied fuel to a spark-ignition combustion chamber. Exhaust gas from this chamber was directed into the cylinders of the diesel. At 700 RPMs the gasoline chamber shut down and the engine ran as a true diesel.
